BIOGRAPHY

Nathaniel Bolton graduated from California College of Arts and Crafts in 2004 with a BFA in Illustration.  For his thesis he created 10 sculptures of species made extinct by human actions.  By choosing a three dimensional illustration as opposed to a traditional two dimensional illustration he was able to reproduce one image in multiple views.  This allows more flexibility in how the illustrations could be used and it was his guiding philosophy for his final year in college.  He graduated with distinction.

While in Tamalpais High School (graduating class of 1997) Bolton began working in theater set construction and continued on in the field while at University of California Santa Cruz.  Recently he has begun designing and building sets for small theater venues in San Francisco.  Most prominently has been his work for the San Francisco based comedy troupe Killing My Lobster.  He has designed and built sets for three of their comedy sketch shows and repurposed pieces for a one night event they held.  In 2010 he was brought in as an official member of their company so there will be many more new sets to be designed and built in the future.

In 2005 Bolton had a character model he made at CCAC on display at SOMArts gallery in San Francisco.  The curator for the yearly Dia De Los Muertos show, Rene Yanez, was impressed with the character and invited Bolton to create a sculpture for that years exhibit.  While there Bolton became inspired by the installations of the other exhibiting artists and in the following year built an elaborate interactive wearable installation.  A few years later he invited Gina Lim to assist in a very elaborate installation where a wooden sculpture built by Bolton lifted panels built by Lim when viewers added stones to suspended baskets.  In every subsequent year Bolton and Lim collaborated to create very elaborate and interactive pieces.

Many of Bolton's drawings have a strong element of fashion design to them.  "As long as I'm drawing clothes on figures I might as well make them my own design"  was the guiding philosophy.  Later he learned how to use a sewing machine to work towards making his drawings actual products.  Inspired by Lim's love of scarves and the ever shifting temperatures of the San Francisco Bay Area he designed and made simple and elegant neck scarves that include hand drawn art work called Artscarves.  You can view them and inquire about purchasing them at www.GinaLim.com

To add to Bolton's Jack-of-all-Trades repertoire he also enjoys photography. His favorite subject matter are old ships.  While at CCAC he worked on a decommissioned WWII steamship being converted into a theater and gallery space called the ARTship.  While there he took many photos of the ship.  Later on a trip to New York he visited the USS Intrepid and spent a day photographing the intricate parts of the ship.

それでも日本語を勉強 したことがあります。(Moreover he has studied Japanese).  With a strong interest in Japanese art and literature, and a desire to travel around Japan without relying on people knowing English, Bolton studied Japanese for four years at City College of San Francisco.  He continues his studies independently, not wanting to forget what he learned despite having limited opportunity to utilize what he knows.
